Paris Junior College nursing student Jennifer Stinnett of Sulphur Springs, Texas, was quietly seated in her Nursing in Health and Illness II class Monday morning when she received a surprise. PJC Director of Health Occupations Marcia Putnam presented her with a scholarship as the class returned from a break. "I'm surprised and honored," said Stinnett as she came forward to receive the student scholarship from the Texas Association of Vocational Nurse Educators (TAVNE). "We are absolutely honored," said PJC Licensed Vocational Nursing Instructor Linda Utley, "because out of the entire State of Texas she was the only student receiving this scholarship this year." PJC health occupations staff attended the TAVNE Fall Conference in Irving, Texas, Oct. 24-26, where they learned the PJC student won the scholarship. "TAVNE leaders were so moved by what Jennifer wrote that they read parts of her essay to the entire group of attendees," said Putnam. TAVNE awarded the scholarship based on the student's dedication to scholarship and service to the community in which they live. Stinnett submitted an essay, documented extracurricular activities and submitted references. For more information about PJC's Health Occupations Program, call 903-782-0734.
