AASU presents Black History Month program

Members of the African American Student Union at Paris Junior College will present a Black History Month program on Feb. 26. The event will be in the Math and Science Building, Room 101, at 12:15 p.m. Highlighting the program is guest speaker Shannon McGuire, pastor of Orange Chapel Baptist Church in Arthur City, Texas. McGuire also works as a juvenile probation officer in McKinney and serves as the Roxton ISD school board president. His son was on last year’s Roxton High School championship basketball team and is the team’s leading scorer this year. “He’s a really good motivational speaker,” said PJC Student Life Director Kenneth Webb. “He’ll relate really well to our students. We hope members of the community join us as well.” Emceed by AASU president Tsavonti Daniels, the program includes the pledge and a performance of Lift Every Voice and Sing by AASU members. Monique Dickerson will give a reading of Still I Rise by Maya Angelou and perform the gospel hymn His Eye Is on the Sparrow by Martin and Gabriel. Chevin Dockins will lead a prayer, and Heather Rowe and Marcus Kraut are delivering a poetry reading. Also giving readings are Tyaisha Allen and Kadija Pannell. Audience members will also be able to enjoy a praise dance performed by Pannell, Rowe and Dickerson.
