Published or Revised August 28, 2014
As the early registration deadline of Aug. 29 nears to sign up for the 5K run at the first Paris Junior College DragonFest, more activities have been added to the all ages’ activity lineup. The day kicks off at 7:00 a.m. with registration for the 5K Fun Run and 1 Mile Poker Walk at the Hunt Center. Both will go from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. The 5K run will wind through the PJC campus, go west on the Trail de Paris to 7th Street, and then return on the same route. The Poker Walk also winds through campus, with five stops to collect playing cards. At the end of the route, the walker’s hand is compared to the dealer’s hand, with a chance to win prizes. First, second and third place trophies for men and women will be awarded in the 5K. Water stations will be available at certain points on the route. A formal welcome will be given by PJC President Dr. Pam Anglin at 9:00 a.m., followed by an opening ceremony including the pledge of allegiance by Boy Scout Troop No. 2 of Paris, the National Anthem performed by a PJC student, and an introduction of the program and activities. The First Responders/Fire and Safety Showcase will be in front of the Administration Building. The Automobile and Motorcycle Showcase will be in front of the Math & Science Building. Vendor booths and games will be in the main courtyard and some games will also be in the Old Gym. At 10:00 a.m. there will be performances and demonstrations from the Watkins Family Martial Arts Academy, Dance Studios of Paris, a high school drum line competition, and the dunking booth. As it warms up, the Ice Cream Freeze-Off will give a chance for a cool-down as Jazzercise and Zumba demonstrations go on. At noon the winners will be announced of the ice cream contest and 5K Fun Run. Early registration at $15 to the 5KFun Run ends at 5:00 p.m. on Aug. 29, after that registration is $20.
