Adult Ed instructors complete special training

Published or Revised May 12, 2010

Four Paris Junior College Adult Education and Family Literacy instructors from Paris and one from Sulphur Springs completed a year-long training program in "Effective Instruction for all Adult Education Students including those with Special Learning Needs," earning 60 hours of professional development, according to Susan Sanchez, Adult Education Coordinator and Instructor for English as a Second Language/Civics. Adult Education instructors who completed this advanced training are Linda Vandiver, Phyllis Archambeault, Dana Neuse and Janice Jackson, all of Paris; and Jacqueline Brice of Sulphur Springs. The completion of this state initiative enables the Paris Junior College Adult Education and Family Literacy Program to establish a Special Learning Needs Team that will be a valuable resource to adult education students as well as other instructors by exploring students' strengths and weakness through the Payne Learning Needs Inventory, incorporating life-long learning strategies in the classroom and assisting students with accommodations. In turn, student retention/success will increase for the program as a whole. These instructors completed many hours of extra work outside the classroom to complete this training. Sanchez served as a trainer-in-training, and is now certified by the state to offer this program throughout the State of Texas through the East Texas GREAT Center.
