Altrusa Club establishes Young Scholarship at PJC

The Altrusa Club of Paris has established the Victorene Young Scholarship at Paris Junior College for women returning to college.
The Altrusa Club and Mrs. Young recently made the scholarship permanent with a $10,000 gift to the PJC Memorial Foundation.
Suzy Hayes, a member of the board of directors, said that the club began giving the Young Scholarship in 1988 in an effort to help women who have had to earlier leave college due to work or to raise children.
"We want to help women continue their studies in the field of education and to earn their degree," Hayes said. "Even though our club has disbanded, this endowed scholarship will allow us to continue our effort to make Paris a better community in which to raise families and educate our people."
Dr. Pamela Anglin, President of Paris Junior College, accepted the scholarship endowment from Mrs. Young and praised her and the Altrusa Club for providing financial support for future students.
"This wonderful gift to PJC will help support the education of many young women in the years to come," Dr. Anglin said.
Mrs. Young, a member of the Altrusa Club for almost 50 years, came to Paris as a young wife and mother "and is a person to be admired and a wonderful example for women of all ages," Mrs. Hayes said.
Hayes said that because of Mrs. Young's dedication to her family, church, community and country, the Altrusa Club is proud to establish the scholarship.
Former board members of the Altrusa Club include Hayes, Kathy Jenkins, Cynthia Syncere, Jean Bible and Claire Anderson.
