Taylor Ammons wins prestigious McLemore Cup

Taylor Ammons, a sophomore women's basketball player from Vicksburg, Miss., was named winner of the prestigious McLemore Cup as the top athlete from all sports at the All-Sports Awards Ceremony at Paris Junior College. She was the first women's basketball player to receive the award since April Woods won it in 2002. In addition, Ammons received the Don Wilhelm Cup for being designated the MVP for women's basketball and was named to All-Region and All-Conference teams. Sean LeBeauf, head women's basketball coach, announced that Meoshi Bradley, Pine Bluff, Ark, was also named to the All-Conference Team, a distinction honoring the league's top 15 players. LeBeauf gave a special team award, the Ambassador Award, for outstanding performance in the classroom, on the court and in the community. This award was presented to Britney Gaines, freshman from Mesquite. Mallory Johnson of Decatur, volleyball player, was named winner of the Bobby Walters Cup for the sophomore athlete with the highest grade point average. Johnson's overall GPA is 3.92 with 48 hours completed at PJC with 4.0. Justin Maness, head volleyball coach, announced that Logan Anglin of Paris, and Hillary Baugh of Trenton were co-winners of the MVP Volleyball Cup. Maness also announced that Logan Anglin, former North Lamar player, is the first player to be named to the Region XIV All-Tournament Team, as well as receiving Honorable Mention All-Conference. Adrienne Boswell, Rockwall, was named First Team All-Conference; and Baugh of Trenton, and Codi Schepp of British Columbia, Canada, were named Second Team All-Conference. Receiving Honorable Mention All-Conference were Morganne Fikes, Rowlett, Tess Williams, Odessa, Kaila Johnson, Kountze, and Heather Rigby, Rowlett. Anglin, Baugh, Johnson and Williams were named as Academic All-Conference athletes. The Vernon Carter Cup, given to the MVP of the softball team, went to Megan Brigance of Flower Mound. PJC head softball coach Corey Lyon also announced that Brigance, Taylor Russell of Whitehouse, and Rachel Damiris of Wichita, Kan., achieved Region XIV All-Academic Team recognition. Desmond King of Alexandria, Louisiana, was given the Carroll Dawson Cup as men's basketball MVP. King was also recognized as All Region First Team and All- Conference First Team. Tom Schuberth, head men's basketball coach, announced that Demarkus Wilson was named Third Team All-Conference; and Bryce Cartwright and Latay Darden were named as Honorable Mention Region XIV as well as Region XIV All-Tournament Team. The Dragons had a successful season and won the Region XIV championship. Deron Clark, Dragon head baseball coach, awarded the Barney Bray Cup for baseball MVP to James Wallace of Corpus Christi. Clark announced that several players have received academic honors. Brian Wuest, Prosper sophomore, and Matt Zapata, Stillwater, Okla., sophomore, have both received All-Region Academic honors. Wuest and Zapata, along with Jordan Baker, sophomore from Frisco, achieved Academic All-American honors. Named as a Distinguished Academic All-American is Michael Chovanec, Arlington sophomore. Dave Johnson, Dragon golf coach, presented the Mickey Flippen Cup for MVP golf to Kevin Geisbrecht, Manitoba, Canada. He was a Medalist at the University of Texas-Tyler Fall Invitational, the Tyler Junior College Fall Invitational, and a Region XIV All-Region Medalist. Thomas Bourne, sophomore from Stoke-On-Trent, England, was a Medalist at the Paris Fall Invitational. Bourne plans on returning home to England and being a Club Pro.
