Paris Junior College Dragons sophomore basketball player Bambale Osby, with Dragon Coach Bill Foy looking on, signs a letter of intent to attend the University of Maryland.

Sophomore Bambale Osby, a strong 6-8 post player for the Paris Junior College Dragons last season, has signed a letter of intent to continue his college career at the University of Maryland. The Richmond, Va., native looks forward to taking his basketball and academic skills to the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference institution. "This is a great opportunity for me," Osby said. "The University of Maryland fit the profile I was seeking at a university - a great coach (Gary Williams), a strong league (ACC), a chance to play and contribute to the team, and located close to my home. I feel very fortunate." Osby had some other universities wanting his skills, according to PJC Dragons Head Coach Bill Foy. George Washington, Rhode Island, Tulane and Dayton all had him on their list of hopefuls. "I'm very happy for Osby," Foy said. "He visited the university last week and felt very comfortable there. Gary (Williams) was impressed with him, and I think he can fill a need at Maryland as a strong interior player." Osby said he looks forward to joining the Terrapins next season and taking some of what he has learned at PJC to the ACC. "If it wasn't for PJC and Coach Foy, I wouldn't be in this position," Osby said. "Coach Foy helped me improve my skills and overcome some weaknesses. My work ethic improved on the basketball court and in the classroom." He said he was fortunate to attend PJC and experience a good small college program. "I appreciate the support I received from the coaches and teachers," said Osby. Although they didn't repeat as NJCAA Division I national champions, the Dragons had an outstanding basketball season, winning the Region XIV Conference championship. Osby's presence under the basket contributed to the Dragons' 24-7 season record. He pulled down 136 rebounds, averaged 5 points per game, shot 74 percent from the free throw line and 61.5 percent from the field. "Osby gave us a strong interior presence, and he will do the same for Maryland," Foy said. "He improved throughout the season, and as he developed good things started happening for him. He is a good athlete and a good student, and that will serve him well at Maryland."
