Dragons golfers take first place, remain ranked No. 7

Published or Revised March 28, 2013

The PJC golf team took first place this week at the 2013 Hal Sutton Intercollegiate Tournament, and remains No. 7 in the nation in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf NJCAA Coaches Poll.

The Dragons won with a two-day total of 607 at the tournament, which was hosted by Centenary College at Stone Bridge Country Club in Bossier City, La., Monday and Tuesday.

The Dragons had a solid performance from the entire team, with all six players finishing in the top 14 individually.

The Dragons were led by Justin Ary, who finished second with rounds of 74 and 73, and Trumann Nugent, who tied for third place with rounds of 76 and 73.

"I was very proud of our team win this week," said PJC Golf Coach David Johnson. "We put some really solid scores up on the second day. They all were focused on helping the team through their own individual decision making on shots. Then, for the most part, they executed the shots.

"We are getting better at the right time, with the Texas State Championship, regionals and district play coming up."

The Dragons' next tournament will be in two weeks at the Texas Junior College State Championship in Aledo.

Complete poll figures will be published in the April 1 issue of Golf World magazine.
