Saturday, Sept. 7, dawned hot and bright for Paris Junior College’s first Day of Service. Volunteers quickly got to work with paint rollers and brushes, transforming Noyes Stadium. Somewhere between 350 and 400 people turned out to help, and the work was largely complete by 11:00 a.m. “Thanks to everyone who came out and spent their Saturday painting,” said PJC President Dr. Pamela Anglin. “Our students really enjoyed the morning and were asking when they could do it again. This will become an annual event and in future years will be spent on community service projects in Paris, Greenville and Sulphur Springs.” For decades Noyes Stadium was leased by the Paris Independent School District and painted blue and white. PJC started men’s and women’s soccer teams last year to again use the well-loved community landmark. The Day of Service painters covered the stadium with a light tan to match the other buildings on the campus. PJC’s volunteer corps was comprised of students, faculty and staff, members of the Board of Regents and friends and family. “We went through 125 gallons of paint,” said PJC Director of Maintenance and Plant Operations Randall Cox. “And there were 400 paint brushes and rollers.” Volunteers didn’t just paint. Many put out paper to cover concrete, swept debris from walls, collected trash, kept paint buckets and trays filled, brought homemade cookies and handed out drinks to others plying their brushes. Each participant received a t-shirt and lunch was provided for all who came. “Saturday was a good day,” said Dr. Anglin.
