The PJC Dragons golf team played against all four-year university teams at the TAMU-Commerce Texoma Chevy Dealers Intercollegiate Golf Tournament held recently at the Tanglewood Country Club in Pottsboro, Texas. They emerged with a second-place finish, with Justin Ary of Quinton, Okla., winning second place individual honors with scores of 75-71-73. The Paris Junior College Dragons golf team is off to a strong start following the first two of the squad's spring tournaments. The Dragons kicked off their spring competition by placing fifth in the Wrangler Classic at Aledo, Texas, with a two-round score of 627. The Dragons then finished in second place this week as the only junior college team in a crowded field at the TAMU-Commerce Texoma Chevy Dealers Association Intercollegiate Tournament in Pottsboro, Texas, with a three-round 896. "Despite being the only junior college in the field, the PJC Dragons played really well," Dragons Golf Coach Dave Johnson said of his team's second-place finish in a 14-team field. "There was some good competition in our groups; the guys stepped up and played well." Johnson said the tough course during the Wrangler tournament was an educational challenge for his players. "We as a group had to hit some shots that we don't have to hit here at Paris," he said following that first tournament. "So it will help us think outside the box at practice. We showed some signs of maturing with good decision making on the type of shot to hit and club selection." That apparently paid off in Pottsboro. "I was pleased with the way the team played," said Johnson. "We still have to get all five players playing well in order to win a tournament, and that's our goal." The Dragons have a two-week break before they head to the District II Preview Tournament at Sugar Tree Golf Club in Dennis, Texas on March 11-13.
