Guest artist brings ceramic sculptures to PJC

The works of artist Karmien Bowman will be featured in a show opening April 21 at Paris Junior College’s Foyer Gallery. Bowman creates functional and sculptural-functional vessels as well as sculpture and murals in clay and bronze. The opening reception will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. that Tuesday and the public is invited to attend the free event.
Bowman is an Associate Professor of Art at Tarrant County College (TCC) Northeast Campus, in Fort Worth, Texas, where she has presented talks on the pedagogy of teaching art and ceramic workshops at national and regional conferences. She was awarded a Faculty Development Leave Award for 2014-15 from TCC.
Maintaining the Yarmouth Studio at her home in Texas, Bowman has led workshops and hosted other clay artists in throwing, glazing and firing techniques. The founding chair of the Cross Timbers Cultural Arts that built the Sam Lusk Outdoor Theater in 1985 in Flower Mound, she was also Artist in Schools for the City of Tyler in 1976 and Artist in Residence for the City of Dallas in 1978. Her work is included in “The Extruder Book” and “From a Slab of Clay” by Daryl Baird. Bowman’s work is in public and private collections, both nationally and internationally.
Bowman will also share her expertise with PJC ceramics students during a separate workshop. The show runs until April 30. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. to noon.
