Homecoming weekend offers entertainment, sold-out luncheon

Paris Junior College Homecoming nominees were recently selected in a preliminary vote by PJC students. The King and Queen will be announced at halftime of the 6 p.m. men’s basketball game against Carl Albert College in the Hunt Center. Nominees are, from the left: (front) Kristi Patel of Commerce, Texas; Stephanie Brock of Arlington, Texas; Lauren Pyka of Fredericksburg, Texas; (back) Garrett Killgore of Frisco, Texas; Justin Wheat of Columbus, Miss.; and Simba Mazambani of Harare, Zimbabwe. Nominees must be full-time students with a minimum of 12 hours, have an overall 2.5 GPA and completed 30 college hours.
Paris Junior College is holding its 87th Homecoming, Nov. 10-12, offering activities for everyone. The Homecoming parade opens the celebration at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10, beginning near the Hunt Center on campus, going through the center of Paris then returning. A pep rally follows the parade and the public is welcome.
"We invite everyone to attend, there is something for every interest," said PJC President, Dr. Pamela Anglin.
Despite being moved to the Civic Center to accommodate ticket demand, the Distinguished Alumni Luncheon honoring Joan Mathis is sold out, though a waiting list is being maintained. It will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12.
"To have the luncheon sold out is a mark of the deep respect and affection held for Ms. Mathis, and reflects her distinguished teaching career and community involvement," said Dr. Anglin.
PJC has modified the endowed scholarship named for Ms. Mathis' parents, Berlin and Katherine Reese, to honor her by including her name.
"If haven't yet gotten a ticket to the luncheon and you would like to help honor her by contributing to the Reese/Mathis Endowment Fund," said Institutional Advancement/Alumni Affairs Director Derald Bulls, "this is a great way to demonstrate your appreciation for Ms. Mathis and her parents."

Other activities over the weekend include the PJC Drama Department presenting "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" in the Ray Karrer Theater Friday evening at 7 p.m.
Saturday morning, PJC Alumni and Friends will have its annual business meeting at 9 a.m. in the McLemore Student Center Cafeteria. Following at 10 a.m., there will be a trolley ride tour of Paris departing from the south side of the Student Center. At 11 a.m. there is a memorial service in the DeShong Chapel, followed by the Distinguished Alumni Luncheon.
At 2:30 p.m. there will be a ceremony honoring three individuals named to the Academic Hall of Honor in the Student Center: educators Robert G. "Bob" White and his wife, Dorothy Bailey White, Ed.D., and retired Navy Cmdr. Thomas R. McCool.
Saturday afternoon in the Hunt Center, the women's basketball game begins against Carl Albert at 4 p.m., followed by the men's basketball game (also against Carl Albert) at 6 p.m. PJC's Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned at halftime of the men's game, approximately 7 p.m. "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" is again offered at 7 p.m., as well as 2 p.m. Sunday.
