PJC hires Gonzalo Garza, Jr. as Women’s Basketball Coach

Gonzalo “G” Garza, Jr. has been named women’s basketball coach at Paris Junior College. Garza succeeds Michael Madrid, who left to take the helm of San Jacinto College women’s basketball in Houston last month. Previously he was the athletic coordinator/director at the Athlos Leadership Academy in Brownsville. “We had a great pool of applicants for the position as we looked for someone who could continue the development of our women’s program,” said PJC President Dr. Pam Anglin. “Coach G has family ties to this area and we look forward to having him and his family in Paris. He will be a great addition to PJC and our athletic program.” Garza has extensive experience as a basketball coach. He was head boy’s varsity basketball coach at Saint Joseph Academy High School for 2012-2014 and a volunteer assistant basketball coach for the Houston Rockets NBA Developmental League Affiliate Rio Grande Valley Vipers in 2011-2012. He served as assistant basketball coach at McMurry University (NCAA Division III) from 2006-2008, including the season they were American Southwest Conference West Division Champions, making the South Region Playoffs. Prior to that he was assistant men’s basketball coach at Collin County Community College from 2004-2006, which included a third in conference and an NJCAA Region V playoff appearance. He was men’s assistant basketball coach at Clarendon Junior College, assisting the team to their first NJCAA Region V playoff appearance in 21 years. Garza was boy’s junior varsity head coach and assistant varsity coach in 2000-01 at San Benito High School and held the same role at St. Joseph Academy 1999-2000, where he began his coaching career. “Coach G” also served as a lecturer-field specialist in Kinesiology – Health and Human Performance for the University of Texas – Brownsville (2008-2014), the same school where he received his bachelor of science. Garza’s Master of Science in Kinesiology is from the University of Texas Pan American. Garza has run numerous basketball and skills camps, and has taught both English and Spanish at the high school and college level. He has also been head basketball coach and president of several youth sports organizations. In college he played for the NCAA Division I University of Texas Pan American from 1995-1998.
