PJC Regents approve new HVAC certificate

Published or Revised October 26, 2010

At their meeting Monday evening, the Paris Junior College Board of Regents approved a new 16-hour certificate in the Heating and Air Conditioning program for Distributed Digital Controls. "It's a new offering," explained Vice President of Workforce Education John Spradling. "Students must already hold a current 40-hour certificate to take it. This course provides a student with an advanced skill set allowing them additional earning opportunities. There are five local companies supporting the program, and we expect to implement it by Jan. 1, 2011." In other business the Board of Regents:
  • Approved a modification to the reading requirement included in the Texas Success Initiative.
  • Approved continuation of a formula to set continuing education course pricing. "We put this in place because the board must approve tuition, and that could delay our offering a course industry needs by a month or two," said Dr. Anglin. "Approving this formula allows us to meet industry needs immediately." The formula allows the college to break even on costs of offering training.
  • Approved a formal Memorandum of Understanding between the Paris Junior College Memorial Foundation and Paris Junior College, stipulating that the college is not liable for any actions of the memorial foundation, nor is the foundation liable for any actions of the college. This is required by the Southern Accreditation of Colleges and Universities. The MOU had previously been approved by the PJC Memorial Foundation board.
  • Agreed to move the next regular meeting of the regents to 7 p.m., instead of 7:45 p.m., on a trial basis, on the fourth Monday of the month.
  • Received the report of the president highlighted by facts about the Achieving the Dream study of "cohorts" which is made up of entering freshman who are then studied as they progress in their studies. The number of students retained from fall to fall has been low but is showing steady improvement as PJC implements ways to address their challenges. A schedule of Homecoming activities was presented to the board for the weekend of Nov. 11-13. The distinguished alumni to be honored are Elmer G. Ellis and Jack E. Carter. The Academic Hall of Honor will receive six inductees: Kelly Baxley, John Dickson House, Mark Hudson, Marva Joe, Dr. Michael D. Miesch Jr. and Duwayne Wirta. Regents were asked if they would attend the annual Texas Community College TA meeting in Austin beginning Jan. 31.
  • Approved the hiring of Amie Cato as Student Recruiter/Academic Advisor in Admissions effective Oct. 25, Evan-Marie Moore as Academic/Financial Aid Advisor in Greenville effective Oct. 18, and Jim Struwe, Business Counselor with the Small Business Development Center, effective Oct. 27; accepted the resignation of Darryl Ellis as assistant women's basketball coach effective Oct. 14.
