Region 14 Medalist

The Paris Junior College golf team took third at the NJCAA District II Championship in Dennis, Texas, to finish out the 2013 season. The Dragons’ Trumann Nugent from Texarkana was named Region XIV Medalist and Zac Oliver from Checkotah, Okla., finished as an All-Region team member in fourth place. The PJC Dragons golf team finished its 2013 season by taking third at the District II NJCAA Championship in Dennis, Texas. Though out of the national tournament, the Dragons' Trumann Nugent won a two-hole playoff over Cameron Lindell of Tyler Junior College to win the Region XIV Medalist title, and Zac Oliver finished as an All-Region team member in fourth place.

"It was a solid year for our team this year. We fell short of making it to nationals, which was one of our goals, and that was disappointing for all of us," said PJC Golf Coach David Johnson.

The 54 holes of the district tournament were combined with the 54 holes from the Texas State Junior College Championship to determine the Region XIV champion. In the 108 holes of play for the Regional Championship, PJC (1,839) finished second behind Tyler Junior College (1,827).

In the District II tournament the Dragons had rounds of 295, 296 and 315, and were led by Nugent with rounds of 72, 70 and 78, which was good for a fourth-place tie.

Other individuals were Oliver, 81, 72 and 74; Jeremy Salas, 71, 77 and 82; Justin Ary, 72, 77 and 82; Evan Feltham, 80, 78 and 81; and Ben Welker, 71, 79 and 80.

"We really played well the first two rounds, and then we couldn’t get it going the third round," said Johnson. "Trumann played well all three rounds and finished his last hole with a hole out for birdie from 80 yards. I thought Jeremy Salas played well in his first big event."

At the Texas Junior College Championship Tournament two weeks ago, the Dragons finished in seventh place at Split Rail Golf Club in Aledo.

The Dragons had a team score of 933 for the 54-hole event. PJC was led by Nugent with rounds of 77, 76 and 79. Oliver fired rounds of 79, 78 and 75.

"We didn’t perform well this tournament," said Johnson. "We couldn’t get anything going on the greens. Several of the other teams played well."
