Three music students from Paris Junior College participated in the 2014 Texas Two-Year All State Choir this weekend in San Antonio. Tyaisha Allen of Mesquite, Selena Johnson of Paris, and Katharine Wiebe of Brookston participated. Certified as alternates, though not attending, were PJC students Mae Mabry of Pattonville and Gwen Steinecke of Blossom.
“Our students had an outstanding weekend of performance with the Texas Two-year College All-State Choir in San Antonio,” said PJC music instructor and director of choirs Philip Briggs. “The choir was beyond exceptional and these young musicians proved it. It was a delight and an event to be cherished. They made PJC proud and I'm so very proud of them.”
The choir performed Mozart’s
Laudate Pueri,
Verleih uns Frieden by Mendelssohn, Michael McGlynn’s
Incantations from Celtic Mass (Alleluia), Dan Forrest’s
Lead Kindly Light,
Sililiza by Jim Papoulis, Forrest’s
The Nightingale,
Total Praise by Richard Smallwood, and Glenn McClure’s
Kyrie.
Guest choir director was Dr. Janet Galván, Director of Choral Activities at Ithaca College. She conducts the Ithaca College Choir and Women's Chorale, and is Artistic Director for the Ithaca Children's Choir. In 1995 she received the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) New York Outstanding Choral Director Award. She has conducted national, regional, and all-state choruses throughout the United States in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center and was a guest conductor for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in 2002, as well as other venues worldwide.
Each year the Texas Two-Year College Choral Directors Association provides a large-ensemble choral-performance opportunity under the direction of a nationally recognized conductor for students enrolled in two-year college music programs in the state of Texas. Students take part in a structured audition process in their respective regions and are then recommended for participation. The end product of this effort is the Texas Two-Year College All-State Choir (TTCASC), presented in conjunction with the Vocal Division of the Texas Music Educators Association annual convention in San Antonio each February.
