PJC athletes recognized at annual ceremony

Paris Junior College recognized its athletes on Monday, May 2, during the school's annual All-Sports Awards Ceremony in the Hunt Center. Destiny Smith, a sophomore women's basketball player from Mount Pleasant, Texas, was named winner of the prestigious McLemore Cup award as the top athlete from all the sports at PJC. In addition, Smith received the Don Wilhelm Cup for being designated the MVP for women's basketball after being named to the All-Region Tournament and All-Conference teams. Sean LeBeauf, PJC athletic director and head women's basketball coach, announced that Dominique Mosley, sophomore, of Chicago, Ill., was named to the All-Tournament Team and received Honorable Mention All-Conference. LeBeauf gave a special team award, the Ambassador Award, for outstanding performance in the classroom, on the court and in the community, to Parris Price, sophomore from Arlington, Texas. Rodney Garza, sophomore baseball player from Magnolia, Texas, was presented the Bobby Walters Cup for the sophomore athlete with the highest GPA. Garza's overall GPA is 3.44. The Carroll Dawson Cup for men's basketball MVP was given to Xavier Roberson, sophomore from Houston, Texas. Roberson also received NJCAA Region XIV honors being named to the First Team All-Conference, Second Team All-Region and All-Tournament Team. Head Dragons Coach Chuck Taylor also announced that Anthony (AJ) Jones, Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., and Maurice "Mo" Hughley, of Queens, N.Y., were named to the Honorable Mention All-Conference Team. Deron Clark, Dragons head baseball coach, awarded the Barney Bray Cup for baseball MVP to Matt Buckmaster of Lakeside City, Texas. Clark announced that several players have received academic honors. These include John Mark Abbey of Paris, Texas; Rodney Garza of Magnolia, Texas; Phil Delisle of Quebec, Canada; Craig Whiteside of Vernon, Texas; and Justin Henderson of Coppell, Texas. The all-conference and all-region honors will be announced at the end of the week. The Mickey Flippen Cup for MVP golf was presented to J.D. Allison, freshman from Hilton Head, S.C. Kyle Doherty, freshman golfer from Frisco, Texas, was named to the All-Region Team. The Vernon Carter Cup for MVP of the softball team was presented by head softball coach, Corey Lyon, to co-winners Jessica Viramontez of Wichita, Kan., and Lauren Smith of Waxahachie, Texas. Smith also made Region XIV All-Academic Team and was named Region XIV Player of the Week, Feb. 22. Lyon also announced Tiffany Kenney of Garland, Texas, and Sarah Long of Rockwall, Texas, made Region XIV All-Academic Team. Long was named Region XIV Player of the Week March 9. Kasey Carlock of Aubrey, Texas, was chosen Co-Pitcher of the Week for Region XIV on Feb. 22. Post-season honors will be announced later this spring, following season play. Head Volleyball Coach Justin Maness awarded the Volleyball MVP Cup to Amy Kleypas, of Crawford, Texas, sophomore. Kleypas was also named to All-Conference First Team, All-Region Team, and All Tournament Teams at both the Brookhaven Tournament and NCTC Tournament. Stephanie Brock, Arlington, Texas, sophomore, was named All-Conference Second Team, and All-Tournament Team at Brookhaven Tournament. Receiving All-Conference Honorable Mention were Kaila Johnson, of Kountze, Texas; Heather Rigby of Rowlette, Texas; Melanie Williams of Lone Oak, Texas; and Codi Schepp of Vernon, British Columbia, Canada, who also won All-Tournament Team honors at NCTC Tournament.
