PJC Coach Chills for Charity

Participants in the recent Paris Junior College girls’ basketball camp had a chance to learn a little more than game skills – they mastered the art of dumping a cooler of ice water over a coach’s head to help raise funds for a good cause. PJC women’s basketball coach Michael Madrid received the Cold Water Challenge from Connors State College coach Jamie Fisher in a video. It is also known as the #Chillin4Charity challenge. “#Chillin4charity is a national campaign that came about in the last few weeks among collegiate women’s basketball coaches and is a fantastic idea to create more funding for the Kay Yow Foundation,” said Madrid. “I thought it would be fun to include our campers in the video since they have been working so hard this week to improve their individual skills.” Madrid endured not one but two coolers of icy water dumped on him by his enthusiastic campers, including Breanna Ford, Hylan Gabeline, Jordan Stanford, Abi Nichols, Katee Garrett, Maylee Belcher and Karlee Lindeman. Afterwards, Madrid challenged fellow women’s basketball coaches Bobby Cope with Rogers State University, Matt Cole with East Central State University, and Rusty Rainbolt with Southern Arkansas University, to step up. A video was made of the event to send to the challenged coaches who must also take an ice bath, video it and make a donation, then challenge others, or avoid the ice and pay a larger donation. The good fun supports a good cause. Click here to see the video. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was founded in 2007, named for former North Carolina State University head women’s basketball coach Kay Yow. The Fund supports research, provides grants, and drives inspiration in the fight against women’s cancers.
