PJC came in third in team competition at the Paris Fall Invitational Golf Tournament held Sept. 16 at the Paris Golf and Country Club.
Paris Junior College finished well in Monday’s Fall Invitational held at the Paris Golf and Country Club.
Sophomore Zac Oliver of Checotah, Okla., finished second overall, leading the Dragons with 70-69. Teammate Oliver Stephens, a freshman from Toronto, Canada, finished sixth with 69-72. The PJC team finished in third place overall at 578, behind winner McLennan Community College (defending NJCAA national champions) and Ranger College.
“We had sophomore leadership on the team and they played well,” said PJC Golf Coach David Johnson. “Sophomores Zac Oliver and Jeremy Salas played tournaments before and Oliver Stephens played well for a freshman. It was the first college tournament for a couple of our freshman and they were trying to make things happen. When you try to make things happen in golf they usually don’t. They’ll relax and learn what’s going on and be better for it down the road.
“All in all it was a good tournament for us. Everyone got to play so I got to see them under tournament situations and that’s totally different than playing golf with your friends. It gave me an idea of who is where and what work we need to do.”
Salas, from Arlington, tied for eleventh with rounds of 71-74. Freshman Tyler Stout, from Mesquite, tied for 18th at 79-70. Collin Thompson, freshman from Longview, shot rounds of 75-78 and Tyler Dunbar, freshman from Lufkin, had 77-84. Freshman Logan Dent of Bangs shot 77-79, and freshman Bryce Shaw of Idabel, Okla., had 78-80. Sophomore Zach McEwin of Paris had 74-84, freshman Ryan Shumaker from Denison had rounds of 82-80 and freshman Brady Wright of Mesquite had 75-78.
In team scoring, McLennan Community College led with 285-279, Ranger College had 289-284, PJC had 285-293, Tyler Junior College had 293-293, Jacksonville College had 300-304, Texas A&M University-Texarkana had 302-305, Oklahoma Wesleyan University had 293-315, Murray State College had 311-306, and PJC’s second team had 308-309.
