Paris Junior College Golf Coach David Johnson and Dragons golfer Dennis Andersen are shown at Split Rail Golf Club in Aledo, Texas, after the tournament April 1-3. Andersen was second individually, with a four under 212 par. He was also named to the NJCAA All-State Team.
The Paris Junior College Dragons golf team finished in second place at the Hal Sutton Intercollegiate Tournament held March 25-26 at The Golf Club at StoneBridge in Bossier City, La. The Dragons shot a team total of 582 with a second-day round of one over par 289.
Dennis Andersen of Denmark led PJC individual play with rounds of 73-71 for a two-day 144 total at even par, earning him second place as an individual. Evan Feltham shot 77 on the first day and came back with a 3-under 69 on the second round for the low round of the day. He finished in a tie for fourth. J.D. Allison fired rounds of 76-72 for a tie for ninth. Robert Raborn shot rounds of 74-77, and Callum Brady 84-80.
The Dragons started their state, district and regional play April 1-3 at Split Rail Golf Club in Aledo, Texas. The 54 holes serve as the first half of NJCAA District II play, with the top five teams advancing to the NJCAA national tournament.
The team placed fifth with a score of 900, and Andersen again placed second individually with a 4-under total of 212. He was named to the NJCAA All-State Team.
The Dragons are now in first place as a team in Region XIV, 10 shots ahead of Texarkana College and 26 ahead of Tyler Junior College.
"Andersen played really well," said PJC Golf Coach Dave Johnson. "He shot consistently every day, which is what you have to do, with a 73, 71 and 68. He's also leading Region XIV in individual play.
"Right now we're in fifth in qualifying to go to the national tournament," said Johnson. "If we finish in the top five we'll go, and we're only 10 shots from the college in third place. Everyone has to play well. I want to win regionals, and I want to make the nationals. We've been doing well despite losing our best player, Justin Ary, to injury for the last three tournaments."
The District Championship will take place on April 15-17 at the Sugar Tree Golf Course in Dennis, Texas. This will determine the Region XIV Champion for 2012 and is a qualifier for the NJCAA National Championship, which will be held May 12-18 at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kan.
