PJC Women’s Basketball Coach Michael Madrid is leaving after two seasons.
Coach Michael Madrid is leaving Paris Junior College after two seasons to take the helm of women’s basketball at San Jacinto College in Houston. PJC provided Madrid’s first chance to take the lead role as a head coach.
“Coach Madrid will be missed at Paris Junior College and I am grateful for the two years he spent here,” said PJC President Dr. Pamela Anglin. “Coach Madrid is a very talented young man and I wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”
“I would like to start by thanking Dr. Anglin and the athletic department for their tremendous support,” said Madrid. “Additionally, I would like to thank everyone at PJC and those throughout the community for the incredible encouragement you have shown my team and myself over the past 2 years. PJC has been a great place to teach and coach and I feel privileged to have had this opportunity.”
Prior to PJC, Madrid served three years as assistant women’s basketball coach at Texas Woman’s University. At TWU, he helped the Pioneers win their first Lone Star Conference tournament championship in any sport when they beat Central Oklahoma in 2011 to advance to the NCAA South Central Region tournament.
Madrid began his coaching career at New Mexico’s Portales High School, helping the team win the 2001 Class 3A championship. After a year at Lubbock Estacado as freshman coach he coached for two years at Lubbock High.
Madrid spent five years at Lubbock Christian University under women’s head coach Steve Gomez, one as a graduate assistant and four as an assistant coach. While he was at Lubbock Christian, the team was the 2005-2006 NAIA National Runner-Up and won the 2006-2007 Sooner Athletic Conference championship.
