PJC honors outstanding athletes at 2017 awards ceremony

Paris Junior College athletes were honored at the PJC All-Sports Awards ceremony held recently in the McLemore Student Center Ballroom. Coaches recognized their players and recapped seasons, then presented awards. The most valuable player for each team was recognized, as were the most valuable player in all sports and highest academic achievement among PJC athletes.
Basketball player Devin Jackson of Houston was awarded the McLemore Cup, given to the top athlete from all PJC sports. Jackson received Honorable Mention All North Zone for Region XIV, and was also co-winner of the Carroll Dawson Cup for Men's Basketball Most Valuable Player (MVP), along with freshman Jordan Embry, of Paris.
Softball player Krystal Andrade won the Bobby Walters Cup, presented to the sophomore athlete with the highest grade point average. Andrade, from El Paso, has a 3.78 GPA.
The Barney Bray Cup for Baseball MVP went to Thomas Jeffries of Flower Mound, Texas. Jeffries was named NJCAA Region XIV Freshman of the Year for the 2015-2016 season, and played in the Texas-New Mexico All Star game in the fall.
Telisa Jones of Houston earned the Women's Soccer MVP. She was team captain and named to the Region XIV All-Region Team as a defender.
Men's Soccer MVP went to Cyrus Gakuo of Dallas, Texas, who was named to the All-Region XIV Team as a forward in the fall.
The Don Wilhelm Cup for Women’s Basketball MVP went to Ramiah Henry of Toledo, Ohio.
Pitcher Lindsay Jacobs of The Colony, Texas, received the Vernon Carter Cup for Softball MVP.
New to the awards ceremony this year was the cheer squad. Delaney Leath, co-captain, received the Cheer Most Spirited Award.
Also this year athletes who had been inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the two-year college honor society, were given recognition by PTK sponsor and English instructor Diann Mason. They included baseball players Luke Bay, Kal Kilgo, Jim McCabe, and Matt Solomon; women's basketball player Samantha Quilantan; cheer squad members Audrey Caton, Jayla Davis, and Hailey Kelley; men's soccer player Zachary Kiser; women's soccer players Telisa Jones, Diana Soto, and Chelsey Walker; and softball players Andrade, Kayleigh Forbes, Ashley Herrera, Lindsay Jacobs, Jena Koneiczka, Ashley Maeder, and Chassity Mendoza.
