PJC Regents hear from students on Community College Day

Three of the six Paris Junior College students who attended Community College Day gave their firsthand impressions of the trip to the Board of Regents at its meeting Thursday evening, Feb. 26. The three included Jeramy Howell, who graduated from the Fannindel school district and is a political science major; Lavelt Page of Dallas, currently the student assistant with the men’s basketball team who plans to go into sports administration; and Lisa Dawes, who returned to school after 21 years in the U.S. Air Force and is an education major. The mother of two is originally from Sulphur Springs, graduated from Greenville High School and now lives in Paris. All praised PJC and the opportunity to go to Austin and take their messages to the Legislature. They were pleased to relate to the Regents that they were going to leave PJC debt-free. “I left that day proud of our PJC students and knowing that the world is in good hands when we are represented by folks like this,” said PJC President Dr. Pam Anglin. In other business the Regents:
  • Were updated on statewide community college tuition and fees that show once again PJC is below the state average in all categories.
  • Approved Mac’s Electric as the low bidder to do electrical work at the PJC-Sulphur Springs Center.
  • Selected Fire-Tech Protection Systems as the low bidder to install a fire suppression system at the PJC-Sulphur Springs Center.
  • Learned from the President’s Report that PJC would receive two matching grants of $25,000 from the Texas Workforce Commission. The Paris Economic Development Council will provide one match for $25,000 towards purchase of a computer numerical controlled (CNC) toolroom mill. The Hopkins County Economic Development Corporation will match the other grant for $25,000 towards purchase of a CNC lathe. The equipment will allow PJC to train 20 machinists in each county for area industry. The HCEDC will also spend $35,000 to purchase a CNC toolroom mill for the lab in Hopkins County.
  • Authorized Dr. Anglin to finalize an agreement for accepting a financial gift for naming rights on the Lecture Hall of the Math and Science Building.
  • Accepted the employment of Educational Talent Search Junior High School Advisor Ashley Shew effective March 9, and the retirement/resignations of Journalism Instructor/The Bat Advisor Sharon Dennehy effective May 15 and of Emergency Medical Services Instructor Brad Bolton effective Feb. 28.
