PJC’s SGA takes several statewide awards

Participation in Reading to the Future, a project sponsored by the Lamar County Coalition of Education, Business and Industry, earned a first place in Community Project for the Paris Junior College Student Government Association. It was one of several awards picked up at the Texas Student Government convention in Corpus Christi recently by SGA. "I am pleased to have these individuals and PJC Student Government recognized at the state level," said PJC President Dr. Pamela Anglin. "An active Student Government Association is good for Paris Junior College. Hopefully, these awards will draw more attention to what Student Government does at PJC and more and more students will get involved." PJC's Student Activities Coordinator Deanna Young won Advisor of the Year, SGA President Carmen Martin, of Bogota, won Student of the Year, and the chapter's scrapbook project took third place in statewide competition. "I didn't believe it," said Martin. "I didn't think I would win. I was proud because I knew how much work I had done but the award made me feel very accomplished." "I was excited and happy and at the time I said it was my award only because they [SGA members] wrote the essay and nominated me," said Young. "It was really their award because I do this job for them." She explained that only SGA members could nominate a staff person for the award. Young and Martin had previously won their awards at the Region III level. There are a total of six SGA regions in Texas with 65 member institutions. In the scrapbook competition, PJC's SGA was up against 30 competitors. While in Corpus Christi, SGA Vice President Yliana Castro, from Commerce, participated in a local neighborhood beautification project sponsored by the convention.
