Paris Junior College radiology students taking first, second and third in a national essay contest include, from the left, Carl Nugent of Sulphur Bluff, Jean Dickerson of Commerce, Kenda Nicholson of Honey Grove (Forest Hills community), and PJC Radiology Technology program coordinator Karen Powers.
First, second and third place in a national essay contest were won by students in Paris Junior College's Radiology Technology program. Sponsored by the Advanced Health Education Center, the essay's topic was, "What Should the World Know About Radiologic Technologists?"
First place and a prize of $100 went to Carl Nugent of Sulphur Bluff. Second place and $75 went to Jean Dickerson of Commerce, and third place and $50 went to Kenda Nicholson of the Forest Hills community near Honey Grove.
"This is an honor for our students and for our program," said PJC Health Occupations Director Marcia Putnam.
"I am trained in a specialized field," wrote Nugent. "I am the eyes and ears of a specialist you will never meet."
"They are assessing your medical history, analyzing your unique physical characteristics, and performing calculations," Dickerson stated, "all while engaging you in a pleasant conversation to set you at ease."
"You must know all of it, all 206 bones, every organ location," Nicholson wrote, "and let's not forget, all the pathologies."
"We are so proud of them," said PJC Radiology Technology program coordinator Karen Powers. "This is a national contest, and for our students to sweep speaks volumes about the quality of our radiology program."
