Regents appoint Roma Street to Place 5 seat

The Paris Junior College Board of Regents filled a vacancy on the board and heard a preliminary enrollment report at its meeting Monday night. Regents approved the committee recommendation of Roma Street, a native of Lamar County, to fill Place 5 on the board that was recently vacated by Gary Preston, who moved out of the district. "Mrs. Street has graciously agreed to serve, and we feel she will be a great addition to our board," said selection committee member Rachel Braswell. Mrs. Street, who attended PJC from 1947 to 1949, said she considers it an honor to be asked to serve. "I look forward to learning the operations of PJC and hope that I can effectively contribute to its leadership," she said. Mrs. Street and her husband, Jake, returned to Paris 12 years ago after working for many years in west Texas. Mrs. Street received her bachelor's degree in business from East Texas State College (now Texas A&M University-Commerce) and attended Texas Tech University. She taught business courses at Powderly, West Lamar and Paris high schools before they moved to West Texas where she worked in the personnel management business for over 20 years. The board received a preliminary report on spring registration, which totaled 4,117 students on Monday. Research Director Dr. Jerry Hammack said enrollment exceeds spring 2006 by about 150 students. Final figures for the semester will be available after the official reporting day on Jan. 31. Regents also reviewed the project designs architects are developing for the proposed new PJC Greenville campus and approved the re-assignment of DeDe Oxley from English instructor to interim director of the Greenville Center. In other business, regents: » Recognized Linda Vandiver, director of the Educational Opportunity Center who is retiring Jan. 31. » Approved a resolution recognizing the accomplishments of the late Dr. Ross Alsup, who was Dean of Applied Sciences and president of the Board of Regents. » Approved the promotion of biology instructor Ed McCraw to Division Chair of Math and Sciences. » Approved the employment of Stephanie Connot as Director of the Lamar County Coalition of Education, Business and Industry and Project SAVE; Danise Petticrew as instructor of Associate Degree Nursing; Alicia Williams as dorm supervisor and assistant softball coach.
