Regents approve reduction of testing fees
Published or Revised December 01, 2009
The Paris Junior College Board of Regents Monday evening voted to reduce testing fees to encourage more students to test and re-test for correct placement in their courses. At the recommendation of PJC Director of Counseling Barbara Thomas, the $10 registration fee for Accuplacer, THEA and Workkeys tests will be dropped. The cost of the Accuplacer and Workkeys tests will be reduced from $29 to $25, and the Director of Learning Skills may waive the Accuplacer retest fees. "The THEA test fee remains at $29," PJC President Dr. Pamela Anglin told the regents. "We want to encourage students to take the Accuplacer test because we get the results back more quickly, and we want to encourage students to re-test as they go through developmental courses as their skills have increased." In other business, the Regents:- Approved the audit report for fiscal year 2008-09. The auditors issued a clean opinion on PJC's fiscal statements for the year.
- Approved amendments modifying the Faculty Association Bylaws, reflecting changes in faculty classifications, attendance policies and representation at the Legislature.
- Modified the mandatory attendance policy for developmental education courses during the spring 2010 semester. The changes are designed to encourage students to stay in all their courses, while still having to finish their developmental classes in order to receive their certificate or degree.
- Heard the President's Report, including an update on the final report of the THECB Formula Funding Committee, which includes continuing the way the small school supplement was appropriated this past Legislative Session. One proposal included in the American Graduation Initiative of the Obama administration calls for contracting with "an organization" to do online vocational courses. Dr. Anglin said this should be an opportunity for community colleges and that PJC is looking to improve online vocational offerings. Announcements were made of upcoming PJC athletic and musical events.
- Selected which regents would attend the Texas Association of Community Colleges Trustees Conference in January 2010 and the Achieving the Dream Strategy Institute in March 2010.
- Approved the promotion of John Shasteen to academic/financial aid advisor in Greenville and the employment of Scott Williams as director of Workforce Training and Continuing Education.
