Newly elected PJC Regents sworn in Monday

Published or Revised May 25, 2010

One returning and two new members of the Paris Junior College Board of Regents were sworn in Monday evening. Taking the oath of office were returning Regent Carlton Grant and newly elected Berdie Gibson and Louise Taylor. Election of officers for the next two years followed, with the re-election of Paul Gene Roden as president, Rachel Braswell as vice president, and Berdie Gibson as secretary. Encouraging Turner International by adopting a resolution of support was the next order of business. PJC President Dr. Pamela Anglin told the Regents that the resolution was similar to those approved by the Paris Economic Development Corporation and the City of Paris, while emphasizing the training that PJC is to provide. In other business, the Regents:
  • Received a positive financial report from Vice President of Business Services John Eastman. It is still unknown if there will be a 5 percent cut this year or a 10 percent cut next year. The total lost in state funding will be approximately $920,000.
  • Heard an update from Vice President of Workforce Education John Spradling on the successful conclusion of the Regional Advanced Manufacturing Academy skills development grant. "RAMA," explained Spradling "was created to serve the manufacturers of Northeast Texas, and three colleges found a way to work together for the benefit of our industries." Industries in PJC's service area contained within the grant — Paris and Sulphur Springs — benefitted with 540 trainees out of a total of 1258. Each received approximately 26.5 hours of training per student at a value to those businesses of more than $829,000.
  • Approved a three-year extension to the Memorandum of Understanding with the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program.
  • Formally declared that 239.26 acres of undeveloped land owned by PJC is no longer needed and authorized its sale for a minimum of fair market value, declared to be $407,700. The proceeds will go towards future construction of a science and technology center.
  • Received an informative report on how community colleges are funded.
  • Were updated on a Higher Education Regional Roundtable meeting held in Tyler.
  • Approved the hiring of cheerleading coach/education faculty member Mona Daniel and accepted the resignation of assistant basketball coach Logan Lee.
