Published or Revised April 26, 2011

The Lamar-Delta Retired Teachers and School Employees Association awarded scholarships to three area students at the annual luncheon held Monday in the Paris Junior College Ballroom. Jade Bolton, Chisum High School, is the daughter of Brent and Deborah Bolton of Paris. Jade participates in Key Club, Student Council, Peer Leadership, FFA, Youth for Christ, basketball, track and tennis. Her awards include the A Honor Roll, Honorable Mentioin Basketball; Second Team All-District Basketball; and Academic All-District Basketball. Jade stated, "I want to help others attain the best education possible because it leads to greater personal happiness, more stable family relationships, more self-esteem and self awareness, a greater sense of self-determination, and greater ability to adjust to change." Casey Grant, Paris High School, is the son of Melissa Douglas of Paris. His high school activities include Key Club, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and baseball. Casey chose education "to make a difference in other students who have the desire to gain knowledge and stay on track," he said. "I am especially interested in math and have been a tutor for other students that were not as comfortable in this area." Jacie Phillips, Chisum High School, is the daughter of Lyn Phillips of Lake Creek. Her high school activities include Key Club, FFA, Crime Stoppers, UIL, volleyball and track. She has served as FFA chapter secretary, president of Crime Stoppers and was a Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) candidate in 2009. Jacie's honors include Greenhand FFA Degree, and Lone Star FFA Degree. "The primary reason I have chosen to pursue a degree in the teaching field is because I want to teach those with dyslexia. This is my goal because I want to help students the same way I was helped through elementary, middle school, and high school. I want to let kids know that just because they have dyslexia doesn't mean they can't succeed," Jacie said. The scholarships were presented by Suzanne Walker, president of the association.
