Retired teachers group awards two scholarships

The Lamar-Delta Retired Teachers and School Employees Association awarded scholarships to two area students at the group's annual luncheon Monday in the Paris Junior College Ballroom.
The criteria for these scholarships included that the student be a senior in a public school in Lamar County or Delta County; pursue study in the field of education; attend Paris Junior College; and be within one year of high school graduation. The scholarship fund of $1,000 must be spread over at least two semesters including a summer session if desired.
The two recipients are Ben Hightower from Chisum High School and Kalli Lane from North Lamar High School.
Ben is the son of Johnny and Sherri Hightower. He was a member of Key Club, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, and played baseball.
"I feel that the field of teaching is well-suited for me," he said. "I enjoy the enlightenment of others. I don't consider anyone to be beyond help, or to have no potential for something better than what they have. I truly believe that teaching is a worthwhile pursuit even if it isn't the most fulfilling financially."
Kalli is the daughter of Mike and Kara Lane. She was a member of the student council, Beta Club, Panther Pack, Zone 32, Spanish Club, peer mentoring, and played volleyball. In addition, she participated in Big Brothers Big Sisters.
"Education is so much more than a ticket to a good job," she said. "Education is about gaining problem solving skills and ways of thinking that will benefit me for a lifetime outside the classroom. Education is about setting goals and finding a way to reach them. These are the 'values of education' that I hope to impart, even in a small way to other students."
The scholarships were presented by Flo Plummer, scholarship committee chairman.
