Four Paris Junior College nursing students are benefitting from $500 scholarships awarded by the Roan Oak Masonic Lodge #860 of Garrett's Bluff, Texas. The lodge was able to double the number of students from last year thanks to matching funds from the Texas Masonic Charities Foundation Inc.
Lodge Treasurer James Cooke said the scholarships are awarded to: Kelti Mowery and Casey Rose of Deport, Texas; Jillian Ross of Bogata, Texas; and Joni Wilson of Roxton, Texas. All are second-year nursing students at PJC.
"The lodge holds fundraisers to help pay for the scholarships," said Lodge Secretary James Cook, "and this year we had the Grand Lodge match it for the first time, allowing us to help four students instead of two."
"Roan Oak Lodge exists to assist us in serving mankind, and Masons strive to live in a manner that makes the world better because they live in it," said the lodge's Worshipful Master Dale Briggle. "Helping these PJC students is one way we can demonstrate that."
"We are so appreciative of the interest the Roan Oak Lodge has in assisting our students at PJC," said PJC Health Occupations Director Marcia Putnam. "Our nursing program demands a lot from our students and this help is very welcome to them."
Roan Oak Lodge's major fundraiser, a fish fry at Garrett's Bluff, is scheduled for Oct. 13 and everyone is invited to attend the fun event. For information about the event, call 903-732-3782.
