SGA Meeting

Attending the recent Texas Junior College Student Government Association Region 3 meeting were Paris Junior College students Sarah Kym of Greenville, left, and Ashley Reed of Clarksville.

Two members of Paris Junior College's Student Government Association (SGA) learned a great deal about going to the Texas State Legislature in Austin after attending a Texas Junior College SGA Region 3 meeting Friday in Mount Pleasant. SGA member Sarah Kym of Greenville and Region 3 Treasurer Ashley Reed of Clarksville went to the meeting with PJC Director of Student Life Kenneth Webb. Participants were informed of the upcoming Community College Day on Feb. 5, 2013, and educating legislators on the importance of funding education. SGA members and advisors also participated in a wide-ranging question and answer session on topics such as getting students involved and keeping them engaged, fundraising ideas, team building and leadership development. Both students also attended a leadership seminar. Reed gave the treasurer's report to the SGA Region 3 executive committee. She said attending the meeting was informative. "Our parliamentarian is helping us prepare for the state SGA convention in Houston. We'll have another meeting in March before that. I had fun at the Region 3 meeting. I met old friends from last year's meetings." Kym attended a committee meeting and said she also found the meeting helpful. "We talked about SGA overall – how people who are in SGA are more involved at their school. I'm on a committee choosing the t-shirt for our state convention, and it was a great experience to get to go." The day ended with a General Assembly on topics such as proper dress and rules of conduct when visiting the Legislature, the state SGA convention in Houston on April 11-14, 2013, and the next Region 3 meeting at Tyler Junior College in March.
