PJC receives three Workforce Commission grants

Paris Junior College has received three regional Workforce Commission grants totaling more than $290,000 to fund programs in 2006.

Admissions Director Sheila Reece told the Board of Regents last week that First General College Student Grants have been approved for another year from the North East Texas Workforce Commission and from the North Central Texas Workforce Commission.

The North Central Texas grant for $132,813 involves a partnership with PJC and Boles High School in Hunt County. It provides outreach services to encourage first-generation college students to complete the work necessary to apply to post-secondary institutions. Sixty students from Boles High School and 25 students from PJC will be involved in the program.

The North East Texas grant is a partnership between PJC, Northeast Texas Community College, Texarkana College and Texas A&M University at Texarkana. Fifty students from high schools in Avery, Chisum, North Hopkins, Paris, Rivercrest, Roxton and Saltillo will be involved, along with 10 college students.

PJC President Dr. Pamela Anglin announced to the board that PJC has received a $75,000 equipment grant from the North East Texas Workforce Commission to support the college's workforce training program. Dr. Anglin said that with the grant funds, PJC would purchase and outfit two mobile distance learning labs that will be used to conduct training programs at business and industry locations.

In other business, the Board of Regents approved fees for new continuing education courses, and Dr. Jerry Hammack reported that enrollment for the first summer semester totaled 1,339 students. The board also approved employment of Blair Daiker as instructor of licensed vocational nursing, Deanna Young as coordinator of student activities, Ashley Johnston as dorm resident supervisor and assistant women's softball coach, and Alex Peevy as instructor of speech and theatre. They accepted the resignation of dorm resident supervisor and assistant men's basketball coach Brad Enright.
