WWII history recalled with mom’s poster
Published or Revised October 26, 2005
Ginna Walker of Paris admires a 1943 World War II recruiting poster that features her mother, Sally Cabaniss Hinds, as a member of the Women’s Army Corps (WAC). Mrs. Hinds was employed at Camp Maxey in Paris at the time the picture was taken. She assisted with the USO and did secretarial work, but wasn’t enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps. She was, however, selected and dressed out in a WAC uniform to pose for this photo that ended up on a poster designed to recruit women for the Army. Walker’s dad, Ben Hinds of Howland, was a career soldier once stationed at Camp Maxey. He spent 27 years in the U.S. Army before retiring and returning with his family to Paris. The poster will be among World War II memorabilia that will be on display during homecoming activities Nov. 10-12 at Paris Junior College.
